The PAʻI Foundation celebrates its MAMo 2017 Awardees; Moana Eisley, Umi Kai, and Brook Parker; in a gallery exhibition featuring kapa (Hawaiian barkcloth), na mea kaua (things of war), and fine art.Moana Eisley's devotion to making kapa has contributed to the reawakening of a valuable Hawaiian practice; highly prized in the past, and cherished in the present. Hawaiian kapa continues to be a part of Hawaiian culture now and will be into the future.Umi Kai is part of a small group of Native Hawaiian artists trying to perpetuate the craft of making tools and weapons that were once essential to survival for Native Hawaiians. In ancient times, Hawaiians only had fire, stone adzes and files (made of coral, stone, and sea urchin spine) with which to work.Brook Parker's art portrays the deep love and admiration he has for his island ancestors. His hope is to teach and inspire our youth to develop their artistic gifts and continue to share their aloha visually for our beloved ancestors.
