Kiahuna Golf Club
In 1984, Kauai’s Kiahuna Golf Club opened to much acclaim as the first course located on the south shore resort area of Poipu. Twenty years later it has undergone a thorough renovation, including a transition to Seashore Paspalum greens and added yardage.
The par-70 Kauai golf course is famous for Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s careful attention to incorporating ancient Hawaiian archeological and historical sites (including blind spider caves in a small outcrop of lava tubes at No. 2) and for its many doglegs, including six on the inward nine.
The two par-3s on the front side—the 203-yard third hole and 191-yard at No. 7—share a double green, a Jones trademark. The most difficult hole is the picturesque par-4, 440-yard second hole, where bunkers and a pond impose on the dogleg left. Seven holes feature water hazards, including three ponds, while a lovely stream meanders along the 12th fairway.
There are some charming diversions at Kiahuna: Joe’s On the Green restaurant and its tasty treats, the option to walk instead of ride, and a fifth set of tees for young golfers and those new to the game. Named the Bird of Paradise tees (2,633 yards), they give families a wonderful setting to share a true Hawaii golf experience.
