Kaunolu Village, Lanai

Kaunolu Village, Lanai

  • Name: Kaunolu Village
  • What: Remains of a historic fishing retreat, spectacular views
  • Where: Southern tip of Lanai
  • More Info: 4-wheel drive required

Located on the southern tip of Lanai, Kaunolu Village was a favourite fishing spot of King Kamehameha I in the 1790’s. This is the place he retreated to after conquering Maui, Molokai and Lanai. Here you’ll find a spectacular view of Shark Fin cove and Lanai’s southern sea cliffs, the remains of Halulu heiau (sacred temple), petroglyphs and “Kehekili’s Leap,” where warriors would demonstrate their bravery by diving off a 18.2-metre cliff. This is a sacred place, so please be respectful.

To get to Kaunolu Village you will need a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Take Hwy. 440 west of Lanai City toward Kaumalapau Harbor. Go past the airport turnoff and take the next left on Kaupili Rd., an unmarked dirt road. Travel approximately 4-kilometres to a yellow standpipe on the right. Turn right on this rocky road, which descends downhill about 4.8-kilometres to Kaunolu Village. Since most of Lanai’s roads are unpaved, don’t hesitate to ask your hotel concierge for help.
